Age of Television Viewer x Hours of Television Watched Per Week
Below, you'll find a bar graph representing a range of ages of television viewers in comparison of how many hours of television they watch in a given week. Generally speaking, it was found that television consumption increases with age. It was surprising to find that children from ages 2 to 11 watch 20+ hours of television in a given week. This age category is also quite broad, as there are several developmental and educational levels included. Obviously a 2-year-old and 11-year-old are being shown different things, and most likely consume televised media at different levels. As a researcher and someone interested in this topic, I would have liked to see this age bracket split into two and narrowed further. Ideally, I would like to see this age group broken into ages 2 to 5 and 6 to 11. Additionally, I would like to see some of the other age categories narrowed, as well. It's far too broad to group people of ages 35 to 49 and 50 to 64 together, as they vary so much in lifestyle, type of television viewed, etc. I'm also curious to know if this data includes television viewed during normal airing times, television viewed on personal technology pieces (iPhones, tablets, computers), and television that was previously recorded on a standard TV.
Overall, I find it somewhat shocking that the lowest amount of consumption is 20+ hours, and the greatest level of consumption is 50 hours. As a current junior in college, I fall in the age bracket of 18 to 24. And given what I know about my peers, I'm surprised to see that we rank as one of the least frequent set of viewers. Speaking from personal experience, while my television consumption varies, I would imagine that on average, I watch 10 hours of TV, at the least, in a given week. I also wasn't expecting to see such exponential growth in hours of television watched as age increased. I would have expected a much less uniform collection of data. For future research, I would recommend examining these consumption patterns in a more in-depth manner, incorporating several of the suggestions and concerns I've voiced thus far.
